  • Sony's PMW-500 Solid State Memory Camcorder is a 2/3" shoulder-mount camera that combines the 4:2:2 color space and high 50Mbps bitrate of the PDW-F800 with the SxS media recording of the PMW-350--introducing a lightweight, low power-consumption HD powerhouse to the world of professional broadcasting. What makes the higher bitrate and wider color space such an advantage? In a word: elasticity. A straight comparison of 35Mbps/4:2:0 to 50Mbps/4:2:2 footage may reveal few differences to the naked eye, but in post-production--where video images can be subjected to a wide degree of processing, color correction, compression and other digital abuse--it's the more robust PMW-500 images that will come out the other side (i.e., on your TV screen) with their original sparkle intact.
  • Those original images, of course, will match Sony's highest broadcast standards, having been captured on the same 2/3" 2.2MP full-HD progressive 3CCDs as used in the PDW-F800. Whether recording in 1080i or 720p, HD or SD (optional), undercranked or overcranked, in the studio or in the field, you'll have a bevy of picture and format options to choose from. Add to that the solid-state simplicity of recording to SxS Memory Cards, which can be formatted to record in either UDF or FAT format (using MXF or MP4 file wrappers)--plus all the high-end features you've come to expect in a CineAlta camera--and the PMW-500 is ready to take its place among the ranks of Sony's top video capture devices.
